Top causes of motorcycle accidents

Motorcycles are a popular mode of transportation in Alabama, which is why every rider should know what the top causes of accidents are before they set out.

Hopping on your motorcycle for a ride can be freeing and fun, but it can also be dangerous. Crashes for motorcyclists are much deadlier than crashes for drivers of cars or trucks. According to the Auto Insurance Center, crashes that involved a motorcycle killed the cyclist over 95 percent of the time. What are the leading causes of these accidents?

Causes for motorcycle-car crashes

There are many things to watch out for and be cautious of as a motorcyclist on the busy streets of Alabama. Be wary of:

  • Driving between lanes: Lane splitting, driving between two lanes of traffic, is dangerous as drivers in cars may find it difficult to see a motorcyclist coming up between them and another car. Many accidents occur when a car does not see a lane splitter and merges into them.
  • Head-on collision: These crashes occur when one car or motorcycle drifts into oncoming traffic. The results can be deadly, especially because they often occur at high speeds.
  • Car making left-hand turns: Many cars forget to watch for motorcyclists on the road, which can lead to this type of accident. This is a very common accident-causer.
  • Car following too closely: Often, cars will follow too closely to the back of a motorcyclist. If a quick-brake is necessary for the motorcyclist, an inattentive driver may crash into them.

Proving negligence

In most of the situations for crash causes listed above, the driver of the car can be seen at fault. However, once a crash occurs, proving fault can be complicated. In order to prove that the other driver is negligent of the crash you would need to show that they did not exercise care, which caused your injuries.
